Water Stress

Definition:
Water stress ‘refers to the ability or lack thereof to meet the human and ecological demand for water’ thus the demand for water exceeds the available amount at a certain period in time.

Why It Matters?
Water is a vital resource especially for Caribbean countries and their biggest sectors, agriculture and tourism. Ranking 15th in the world’s most water scarce countries (UNEP 2012) Barbados needs sustainable water resources and implementation. Barbados’ water stress is one of the highest in the Caribbean (80.5%) therefore it is an urgent need to develop sustainable water practices.
